Area View
Area View.
• Lane Assist
• Side Assist.

Assistance & Convenience Systems

Actively & Passively Safe:
The new Touareg monitors its surroundings

Proactive occupant protection system networks active and passive safety New dimension in surroundings perception by ACC and Area View

Wolfsburg/ Florence, March 2010. The new Touareg offers an exceptionally large range of the most advanced technologies. Many of them are completely new, while others were intensively further developed. The parking brake is now activated by the press of a button. The camera-based Area View monitors the Touareg's surroundings and provides for additional safety. Lane Assist ensures that the vehicle does not stray from the right path; meanwhile, Side Assist warns of vehicles approaching from the rear when changing lanes. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) brakes the car to a stop in an emergency; in parallel, the Proactive occupant protection system tensions the belts, and - starting at a specific transverse acceleration - closes the windows and the panoramic sunroof. Bi-xenon headlights with Dynamic Light Assist "see" the oncoming traffic and control the main beam to eliminate un¬wanted glare. Adaptive roll compensation as a feature of the further advanced air suspension ensures that the Touareg holds its tracks like a sports car with superior performance. And when the going gets tough nearly all of the assistance systems are networked.

Proactive occupant protection system
In the Proactive occupant protection system now available for the first time, Volkswagen is extending the new Touareg's high level of passive protective potential by adding a safety system. The key property of the occupant protection system is that it combines active and passive safety elements. The technical foundation is supplied by sensors of the driving dynamics control systems (e.g. brake assistant and ESP). They help to detect critical situations with elevated accident potential early and defuse them. Volkswagen offers the Proactive occupant protection system as part of a complete driver assistance package. It includes adaptive cruise control (ACC) including the Front Assist surroundings monitoring system, park distance control, Lane Assist lane-keeping assistant and Side Assist lane-changing assistant. Proactive occupant protection becomes active as soon as one of the following criteria is met:
"Emergency brake activations": Very quick brake pedal activa¬tions that generally go hand in hand with activation of the brake assistant.
"Hazard brake activations": Strong rise in brake pedal pressure during brake activation, e.g. from high speeds on ice or snow or in aquaplaning.
Unstable driving states such as severe under steering or over steering of the Touareg with ESP intervention.
When the system detects a potential accident situation, the occupants and the vehicle are prepared for a possible accident. Automatic tensioning of the safety belts secures the driver and front passenger in their seats to attain the best possible protective potential of the airbag and belt system. In case of high transverse dynamics the side windows and panoramic sunroof are also closed, leaving just a small air gap. Closing of the windows offers optimal support to the head/side airbags which results in the best possible protection (in this case, airbag trigge¬ring may occur in response to standard rollover sensor signals).
Taking an integral approach to safety, the Proactive occupant protec¬tion system is combined with the surroundings sensors of adaptive cruise control (ACC) to form a shared system. Based on radar sensors and camera technology that looks far ahead and monitors the vehicle's surroundings, the driver is warned in the event of an impending front-end collision and is supported by brake activations all the way up to autonomous emergency braking (Front Assist). If a situation is assessed to have an acute risk of collision, the driver and front passenger as well as the vehicle are prepared for the impending accident, as previously described, by the Proactive occupant protection system.

Area View
Area View is a surroundings monitoring system being introduced for the first time at Volkswagen. Via four cameras (in the tailgate, outside mirrors and radiator grille) Area View transfers images of all of the Touareg's surroundings to the central touchscreen in the centre console. Several images can be displayed simultaneously by split screen here. The control module also creates a high-resolution composite image of the surroundings from the four individual camera images - from the bird's eye perspective of a virtual camera located above the vehicle.
Depending on the selected view, static and dynamic auxiliary lines are shown,. These auxiliary lines are used to help the driver better assess distances, to describe the possible driving path based on the steering angle or to show a recommended driving manoeuvre.
In off-road driving, front and side cameras are used by Area View to transfer images directly in front of and next to the vehicle - which is of inestimable value to the driver on extreme trails. Thanks to "Trailer View" mode, movements of a trailer in response to steering inputs can be displayed.
Another example of the wide array of Area View capabilities is the "Cross Traffic" view. This function introduces a new dimension to enhanced safety. The reason: For the first time, Area View lets the driver see 90 degrees to the left and right at points located at the very front and rear of the Touareg - i.e. "around the corner" - and view traffic situations that would otherwise only be perceptible by "incrementally" moving the vehicle for a better view. This is enabled by the 180-degree wide-angle lens of the front and rear cameras.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) autonomously controls the safe distance to traffic ahead of the vehicle - a cruise control that not only accelera¬tes but also brakes. To a stop in an emergency. The space in front of the vehicle is monitored by two radar sensors. This dual radar system has a range of 200 meters with an aperture angle of 40 degrees.
For the first time at Volkswagen, the ACC system in the new Touareg is now - via the driver assistance package - not only networked with the surroundings monitoring system Front Assist, rather with an entire range of other systems as well. They include the new functions "Stop&Go" (automatic driving / braking in stop-and-go traffic), die automatic emergency braking (ANB) and the also new Proac¬tive occupant protection system (belt tensioning for driver and front passenger by electric motor, closing of windows and the panoramic sunroof in advance of potentially hazardous situations). A system network consisting of 27 control modules with 1,690 signals provides for a gain in convenience and safety here. In addition, the new gene¬ration ACC system evaluates the route data of the navigation system and information from the front camera (road detection) and integrates route guidance into cruise control.
Due to the high data volume in the vehicle, Volkswagen is implemen¬ting what is referred to as a FlexRay bus system in the new Touareg, which is required to make such multi-layered networking possible in the first place. The reason: The FlexRay bus enables data transmission rates of 10 Mbits/s; a conventional CAN bus can handle 500 Kbit/s - one twentieth of the speed.
On an open road, ACC can theoretically accelerate the car up to a speed of 250 km/h. If a slower vehicle appears in the car's own driving lane, the system automatically brakes to maintain the legally prescribed safe distance ahead. The driver can calibrate this distance over four levels and choose one of three driving programmes ("Standard"/"Comfort"/ "Dynamic").
When the driver activates the indicator lights on the motorway, the system detects this and improves vehicle dynamics under considera¬tion of traffic behind the car. On the other hand, if the vehicle in front decelerates to a stop, the Touareg also brakes and stops behind it. If the driver in front then drives off again within three seconds, ACC auto¬matically follows ("Stop&Go"). If the stopped condition lasts longer, by pressing the "Resume" button on the steering wheel the driver can activate a longer time window of 15 seconds - during which the vehicle will automatically follow. This "closing-ranks" function is very help¬ful in a traffic jam, comfortably closing the gap to the car ahead. This new "Stop&Go" functionality offers substantial convenience and even makes ACC appealing in city traffic.

Front Assist
As a surroundings monitoring system integrated in ACC, Front Assist helps to avoid collision accidents. It initiates appropriate protective measures well in advance of a critical situation. For example, it builds up sufficient pressure in the brake system and preconditions the hydraulic brake assist. In case of acute danger, the driver is then made aware that action needs to be taken to defuse the situation by visual and acoustic warnings and a brief pulse of the brake pedal.
If the driver does brake as expected at this moment, the Touareg auto¬matically generates as much brake pressure as is necessary to avoid a collision. Under optimal constraints (activation time, driving situation, road grip) it is possible to avoid a front-end collision. If the driver decides to avoid the obstacle by steering, the vehicle's dynamics are improved by stiffer damper tuning (on vehicles with air suspension).
If the driver does not react after the warning pedal pulse, however, braking deceleration is initiated until the pre-defined reaction time expires at a rate of 3 m/s2. If the driver still remains passive, deceleration is increased to 5 m/s2. If a collision is unavoidable, an emergency braking function is activated to reduce the severity of the accident. The hazard lights system is also automatically activated.

Lane Assist
The lane-keeping assistant Lane Assist also operates camera-based. If there is a risk that the car will leave the lane without a indicator light activation, the system warns the driver by steering wheel vibration and a visual representation of the detected and crossed over lane markings in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. The system consists of a camera located between the roof liner and the rear-view mirror and a vibration motor in the steering wheel. The camera detects visible lane markings (markings on one side are sufficient) and computes the risk of leaving the lane by a special algorithm that takes vehicle dynamics data into account. When activated, Lane Assist is active from speeds of over 65 km/h - i.e. outside of the city limits. The system is deactivated when the vehicle's speed drops below 60 km/h.

Side Assist
Two 24-GHz radar sensors at the rear of the Touareg scan the approaching traffic in the rear area. LEDs in the door mirrors inform the driver when other vehicles approach (a) in the blind spot (Blind Spot Detection) or (b) extremely quickly (Lane Change Assist). If the indicator light is activated during this informational stage, this suggests an intentional lane change and therefore a potential hazard. The now bright flashing of the LED in the door mirror signals the driver of the potentially dangerous situation.
If the Touareg is not only equipped with Side Assist, but with ACC as well, the functionality of Adaptive Cruise Control is extended by data fusion of the two systems. The ACC now networked with Side Assist in this case assesses whether a rear-end collision can be avoided by acceleration, for example, provided that there is sufficient open space in front of the Touareg.
Bi-Xenon with Dynamic Light Assist: As a world's first, Volkswagen is offering the Touareg's bi-xenon headlights with a camera-based continuous main beam light: Dynamic Light Assist. In conjunction with a camera integrated behind the front windscreen, the main beam lighting modules of the bi-xenon headlights are continually active; they are only dimmed in those areas in which the system has analysed a potential disturbance to other drivers in traffic.
This gives the driver significantly more light and therefore a clear gain in safety and driving convenience. This functionality is implemented by an additional aperture stop between the reflector with xenon light source and the lens. In conjunction with intelligent lateral swivelling of the entire module (via cornering light functionality) independent control of the left and right headlight makes it possible to utilise this additional aperture geometry to mask the light source only in those areas in which glare could be emitted.
The real highlight takes effect at speeds from 65 km/h: With the front camera, the cornering light control module detects the vehicle ahead and "shifts" the light beam just up to its rear end or in some situations lateral to the car - without bothering the other driver with unwanted glare. The enhanced safety and convenience offered by Dynamic Light Assist is as significant as the introduction of Xenon technology itself once was.
