Ignition lock can be turned to the left or right
All of these systems are brought to life in the customary standard configuration: by the ignition lock just to the right of the steering wheel. However, the ignition key has been completely redesigned, and the elegant black high-gloss look of its surface gives it the high-end appearance of masterpieces by luxury pen manufacturers.
In parallel, Volkswagen modified the ignition lock itself - not reinvented here but certainly adapted to conditions of the year 2010. The fact is, that electronics has long been making in-roads into many branches of mechanical design. And so the Touareg team designed an electronic ignition lock that turns in both directions. Logically speaking, a start-stop button would really suffice in an electronic system. But customers do not always opt for a locking and engine starting system, such as the one Volkswagen offers on the new Touareg as the "Keyless Access" system (standard on the Touareg Hybrid and V8 TDI). And of course people are accustomed to certain habits: Get the key out, climb in, start the ignition. This is precisely one of those subconscious habits that people automatically play out, and so they prefer them too. Only, why should the key always be turned to the right, just because it always has been? There is simply no reason for this.
To start the vehicle, the remote key fob is inserted in the ignition lock - a more fitting name would be Docking Station here. In this first position, infotainment components such as the radio or navigation system are activated. As mentioned, the highlight is that to start the engine the key may be turned to the right or left - both directions are possible - and contacts the related end stop. To enable engine starting the brake pedal must be activated in parallel.
